World’s Edge Farm

World’s Edge Farm is a second-year market garden operated by Susan and Edward Herrick-Gleason (and four of their children) and located on O’Brien Farm Foundation land in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. All of our vegetables and herbs are grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.

Edward is an astronomy writer and former planetarium director who has recently developed a passion for sustainable local agriculture.

Susan grew up in St. John’s and has been growing vegetables and herbs for 40 years. She returned home with her family in 2024 after many years of homesteading and foraging in Maine.

We sell our produce through the Avalon Food Hub. Contact us at susanherrickgleason@gmail.com.

Here at World’s Edge Farm we believe that growing food locally makes communities healthier and more resilient. We look beyond the model of large-scale, mechanized agriculture in traditional bread-basket areas to consider what ordinary people can grow on the land that they have. We believe that even Newfoundland, with its notoriously thin, rocky soil, can be self-sufficient in food.

We advocate a natural method of farming and gardening that creates as much food as possible with as little work as possible. This method relies on high crop diversity, with annual vegetables and herbs interspersed with perennial vegetables such as rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, and currants and perennial herbs such as chives, oregano, mint, sage, and thyme. We love to take risks and experiment to discover new ways of growing more food with less effort.
